UK Online Centres
UK Online Centres
UK online centres provide millions of people with access to computers and the internet, plus help and advice on using them.
Social and digital inclusion - The gap between the 'haves' and 'have nots' of ICT is deepening. Technology has changed how we live, work and communicate, with each other and with the state.
Skils and employability - For many of UK online centres', computers and the internet can be the hook that draws them into a centre, and onto further learning.
Transformational government - As more and more central and local government services shift from face-to-face to online channels, the need to make them work for people of all backgrounds and all social groups becomes more urgent.
UK online centres were set up by the government in 2000 to provide public access to computers. Over the years the role of the network has developed beyond access, and UK online centres exploit ICT to help improve individual lives, community cohesion and social inclusion.
