Conquering Challenging Behaviour & Understanding Behaviour

The inspirational and motivational speaker on Behaviour Management spoke to a group of Blackpool staff from Primary & Secondary schools.

The lively and interactive session touched on those strategies that can support, manage and motivate students.  With the teacher as the decisive element in the classroom that can determine the ethos and learning atmosphere, the group explored those concepts that can enhance their approaches to de-escalate potential behaviour problems.  Personal handling and modelling appropriate behaviour techniques were discussed and highlighted.

An amusing review of specific behaviours in our schools were categorised into attention, revenge, self-esteem and control.

Practical strategies to model and praise appropriate behaviours were discussed with: “make the extra-ordinary, out of the ordinary” as a phrase, to encourage praise to be given to the majority of behaviours.

Other phrases used were: “praise in public, reprimand in private”; “badge ripping”;

“Being aware of the learning surroundings” to take control of the area; “Can’t make an impression twice” relates to immediate body language; “Agree and move on” supports the move to not taking comments personally; KISS – “kept it short and simple” to keep instructions clear; “What should you be doing now” to keep engagement high and avoid confrontation and the opportunity for arguments;

“Deal with it yourself” to avoid passing over issues to others.

What action you take as a teacher is crucial to behaviour management came across strong, as a concept running through the event, together with the need to build a rapport with students to promote engagement.

A great event, full of fun with powerful messages!
